A History
of Pagan Europe (Paperback) by Prudence Jones
This is a book that was recommended to me, and I have to admit
that it is one of the best scholarly texts on the history of European
Pagan religions. Jones and Pennick trace the evolution of Pagan
religions in Greece and Rome, the religions of the Celts, Paganism
in Germany and the Balkans, and the current Pagan revival. Filled
with concise information and illustrations which add to the content
rather than distracting from it, I'm sure I'll be referring to
this book again in the future.

The Mirror
of the Gods: How the Renaissance Artists Rediscovered the Pagan
Gods (Hardcover) by Malcolm Bull
In writing about the process by which Renaissance artists came
to terms with what had become a completely alien system of thought
and representation, Bull (Seeing Things Hidden) brilliantly shows
classical antiquity's material nearness (its remnants were scattered
about an explosively growing set of Italian city-states) and its
psychological distance—a distance that artists set out to close,
transforming their own culture in the process. The result is a
terrific god-by-god account of the Renaissance's reimagining of
mythology, undertaken in successive chapters; Hercules, Jupiter,
Venus, Bacchus, Diana and Apollo are bookended by chapters on
"Sources," "Objects" and "The Mirror." Bull's anecdotes are compelling
and his prose light and clear, but his text is primarily a scholarly
one, copiously footnoted and written for an audience willing to
immerse itself in a world constructed of texts and art.

Modern Pagans:
an Investigation of Contemporary Ritual (Re/Search) (Paperback)
by V. Vale (Author), John Sulak (Author)
This is the most uncensored, comprehensive guide to Pagans around
the world today. Dozens of interviews cover a wide range of Pagan
practices, from witchcraft, Northern tradition, santeria, shamanism,
Druids, Goddess worshippers and more. The book covers important
topics such as child raising, living arrangements, sexuality (lots
of that), music, and bereavement (death), as well as the more
spiritual side of Paganism. The political engagement here is widespread,
embracing anti-capitalist and anti-globalist activism, environmental
action, and the like. The emphasis is on taking personal responsibility
for one's life—essentially, anarchism boiled down to its roots.
Many empowering and uplifting stories about non-ordinary people:
Starhawk, Genesis P-Orridge, Diane di Prima, and others are featured,
as well as comprehensive bibliographies and filmographies that
allow the reader to delve deeper into the subject.

A Book of
Pagan Prayer (Paperback) by Ceisiwr Serith
"It is you who will be talking to the gods. Be clear. Be careful
in how you pray. Take care how you come before the gods. Give
them your best." There are many reference books on elaborate pagan
rituals but never - until now - a guide to the most basic of practices:
prayers and offerings.
A Book of Pagan Prayer provides the pagan community a comprehensive
and thoughtful selection of prayers - and shows readers how they
too can create their own. After an introduction on why to pray,
author Ceisiwr Serith explores how to pray through words, posture,
dance, and music. He explains how to prepare for and compose prayers,
how to address and honor the deities, and how to conclude a prayer.
Serith also answers important questions, such as: Why should pagans
pray? Should prayers be spontaneous? What are offerings about?
Is all this just trying to buy the gods off? Gathered from many
traditions - including Celtic, Germanic, Egyptian, Greek, and
Zoroastrian - this guide includes nearly 500 sample prayers organized
by purpose.
