The Secret
Teachings of All Ages (Reader's Edition) (Paperback) by Manly
P. Hall
In 1928, a 20-something Renaissance man named Manly Hall self-published
a vast encyclopedia of the occult, believing that "modern" ideas
of progress and materialism were displacing more important and
ancient modes of knowledge. Hall's text has become a classic reference,
dizzying in its breadth: various chapters explore Rosicrucianism,
Kabbalah, alchemy, cryptology, Tarot, pyramids, the Zodiac, Pythagorean
philosophy, Masonry and gemology, among other topics. This affordably
priced edition would be vastly improved by a new foreword, placing
the work in some kind of historical and critical context and introducing
readers to the basic contours of Hall's sweeping corpus. Instead,
we have a disciple's adulatory 1975 foreword, which merely parrots
the same themes of mystery and esoterica that are espoused in
the book. Readers who are unfamiliar with Hall's work will be
at a loss in ferreting out which chapters have stood the test
of time and which have been vigorously debunked (like the one
on Islam, which actually uses novelist Washington Irving as a
primary source on the prophet Muhammad). However, they will also
marvel at the sheer scope of Hall's research and imagination,
and at J. Augustus Knapp's famous illustrations, including a 16-page
color insert.

Three Books
Of Occult Philosophy (Llewellyn's Sourcebook) (Paperback) by Henry
Cornelius Agrippa
Seeing there is a threefold world, elementary, celestial, and
intellectual, and every inferior is governed by its superior,
and receiveth the influence of the virtues thereof, so that the
very original, and chief Worker of all doth by angels, the heavens,
stars, elements, animals, plants, metals, and stones convey from
himself the virtues of his omnipotency upon us, for whose service
he made, and created all these things: wise men conceive it no
way irrational that it should be possible for us to ascend by
the same degrees through each world, to the same very original
world itself, the Maker of all things, and First Cause, from whence
all things are, and proceed; and also to enjoy not only these
virtues, which are already in the more excellent kind of things,
but also besides these, to draw new virtues from above.

The Greek
Magical Papyri in Translation: Including the Demotic Spells: Texts
(Paperback) by Hans Dieter Betz
As important as the Greek magical papyri are to the understanding
of Greco-Roman religion, as noted by Betz in his Introduction
to the Greek magical texts, their full significance can be perceived
only when it is realized that these texts written in Greek are
part of a larger corpus that also includes texts written in that
stage of the Egyptian language known as "Demotic," and that the
corpus as a whole derives in very large measure from earlier Egyptian
religious and magical beliefs and practices.
"The Greek magical papyri" is a collection of magical spells and
formulas, hymns, and rituals from Greco-Roman Egypt, dating from
the second century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. Containing a
fresh translation of the Greek papyri, as well as Coptic and Demotic
texts, this new translation has been brought up to date and is
now the most comprehensive collection of this literature, and
the first ever in English.

The Chemical
Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz (Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks
Series) (Paperback) by Christian Rosencreutz
Despite its importance as a key text of the Western esoteric traditions
this is the first ever contemporary English translation of this
book. is the only one of the three central Rosicrucian manifestos
that is concerned with the inner transformation of the soul. It
is a deeply interior work one which asks the reader to step into
its world of symbols and walk with Christian Rosenkreutz along
his path of transformation.
Surfacing in 1616, the Chemical Wedding was the third and last
commentary released by the Rosicrucians. Whereas the first two
manifestos-the Fama and Confessio-were seditious declarations
which seem to possess more of a fairy-tale quality than anything
else, the Wedding stands on its own merit as one of the most profound
and impenetrable hermetic allegories ever written. The story centers
on a man who is summoned by an Angel to witness and take part
in a mysterious process that bears very little resemblance to
an actual wedding. Despite the success of he and his compeers
(qualified by a selection where the other candidates who are not
worthy to participate are killed) the story ends in sagacious
irony, leaving the protagonist to stand guard over his reward,
forbidding him to ever glimpse it.

Egyptian Magic
(Paperback) by E. A. Wallis Budge
Sums up all that is known about magic in Ancient Egypt: the role
of magic in controlling the gods, powerful amulets that warded
off evil spirits, scarabs of immortality, use of wax images, formulas
and spells, the secret name, much more.
Unlike most of Budge's other works, this is written for the layman
to understand. Though he still cannot resist showing off his skills
as a scholar, one doesn't need a vast knowledge of Hebrew, Greek,
Coptic, and Arabic alphabets to gain the book's full value (I
often wonder if at some point in his career Budge didn't "sell
out," writing books that people outside Oxford and Cambridge would
want to read.). Virtually every amulet and talisman is covered,
along with their proper use and materials they were made from.
As always, the introduction and stories Budge gives are fascinating
as well, giving tales not generally told in modern times and the
various mechanics of how the Egyptian priests and magicians performed
their magic. One can see why Budge's work is still in print, as
he offers the reader a maximum of research and scholarship with
none of the new-age BS that is so common in such books written
today.
